What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a state-of-the-art restoration that will replace a missing tooth. The implant is made of titanium, and its post will actually mimic the roots of a lost tooth. Once the implant has been given time to undergo a process known as osseointegration, or fusion with the bone, another restoration can be placed over it to fill in your smile.
Most implants are made to hold crowns, but some can even hold fixed bridges and full denture plates.

You might need or want an implant because you are missing one or more of your teeth. Rather than wear a partial denture or having to compromise your natural teeth, an implant works on its own to replace just what is missing. Who is a candidate for a Dental Implant?
For implants to work and heal properly, a patient needs to have enough healthy bone in the area where the implant is needed. This is because the implant will actually fuse with the underlying bone in three to six months after being placed. If you have areas of bone loss, a bone graft may be needed before the implant can be inserted. To determine if you have areas of bone loss, we will take a series of special dental x-rays before creating a treatment plan.
What happens during the Dental Implant procedure?
The oral surgeon numbs the area of your mouth with a local anesthetic. The oral surgeon makes an incision into the gums and inserts the titanium implant post into the jawbone. You will be instructed on how to care for the implant over the course of the next few months as well as what you can and cannot eat. We will then place a restoration over the implant once it has been given enough time to heal.
