Nitrous Sedation
What is Nitrous?
Nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” is a gas that is used for mild sedation in dentistry. By inhaling in a controlled concentration, it can help patients alleviate anxiety that may otherwise cause anxiousness for them. When used in small doses during dental visits, nitrous oxide does not pose any long term risks to the body.
It is safely administered and can be used on patients of all ages and varying needs. In fact, it is especially beneficial for patients who have special needs or for smaller children who are having difficulties receiving treatment.
Why would you need Nitrous?
Nitrous can be used to put you into a calm and more relaxed state while having a dental treatment done. Many people are nervous of the dental office, and tend to forgo treatment because of this reason. When you receive nitrous oxide, you are put into a more relaxed state that allows you to still be slightly aware of your surroundings without truly understanding what is going on. The sedation is provided easily and safely in our office and is available upon request.

What makes you a good candidate for Nitrous?
You have to be healthy enough to undergo nitrous oxide sedation. Because the gas is customized to each individual patient, it is safe and highly effective. In most cases, patients who simply have anxiety or fear are candidates for nitrous oxide. The reasons someone might develop this type of anxiety include:
- A phobia of needles
- Difficulty being able to control your movement
- Past dental experiences that have proved to be traumatic
- Difficulty with numbing agents
There are situations that can keep a patient from receiving sedation dentistry, which includes:
- Being pregnant
- Sinus congestion
- Certain medications you are currently taking
- Respiratory disease
Your medical history is also important, so make sure you take the time to thoroughly explain any surgeries or treatments you have received in the past.
What can you expect when receiving Nitrous?
After sitting comfortably, we will administer nitrous oxide through a tube that is attached to a nose mask. The nose mask is placed over your nose and the gas flows into your system. You will begin to feel calm, comfortable and slightly dissociated. Treatment will be done while you are under sedation and the effects will wear off shortly after the work has been completed.
