Tooth Fillings

What are Tooth Fillings?

A composite (tooth-colored) filling is used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. Composite fillings are tooth-colored alternatives to the traditional metal fillings you might be accustomed to. This filling material better mimics the look of your actual teeth, allowing the filling to blend seamlessly into the rest of your smile. If you ever need a filling, you can feel confident the appearance of your smile will not be compromised. Composite fillings are completely free of metal, which makes them a great choice for people who want to avoid adding metal to their smiles. The filling procedure is done quickly and easily in our office and you can leave with a smile to be proud of.

Why are Dental Fillings needed?

To determine if you need a filling, an exam and x-rays will be required. Composite fillings are preferred for aesthetic and durability purposes. You may need fillings if you have a cavity, older metal fillings that you would like to replace, or deep grooves in your teeth.

Cavities can become a problem if they are left untreated, as it will lead to severe tooth decay and even tooth loss.

What makes you a candidate for Dental Fillings?

Before a filling is placed, you will come into our office for an examination. In some cases, a dental x-ray is necessary to help us find cavities. If a cavity is found, you will be advised to have a filling. The procedure is quick and easy, Furthermore, the procedure only requires local anesthetic so that it is safe for most patients.

What happens during the procedure for Dental Fillings?

A local anesthetic is administered to numb the area for your comfort. The decay is carefully removed from the tooth, creating a small hole. Next, the hole is prepped by a special bonding agent, and then the composite resin material is molded in place with special tools. The filling is then smoothed out so that it fits and feels comfortable. Next, a curing light is used to harden the filling material. Afterward, the filling is polished and smoothed. It is important to keep up with routine dental appointments so we can detect cavities before they get severe enough to need a root canal.

If you think you might need a filling or would like to learn more about this procedure, call our office today and our helpful staff members can further assist you.
